How polystyrene is used in everyday life

Many people do not realise it but they use things that are made of expanded polystyrene every day. This rigid and tough form of plastic comes up in day to day life very often, such as the packaging for household products, fragile goods and more. The plastic is durable and can be moulded into a number of different shapes, making it very useful.

Expanded polystyrene is a frequently used form of plastic which is used for packing material, building insulation as well as cushioning delicate products in boxes for safe delivery. The material is instantly recognisable for its closed-cell foam makeup, which means that it is white and solid but has a foam-like appearance.

Expanded Polystyrene Products come in many shapes and sizes, with panels of them being often used by businesses. It is also known as “bead board.” The material is popular around the world for packaging since it can be moulded exactly to the product being packaged to ensure it stays in place when the package is being transported, for example.

Expanded Polystyrene Products can be ordered and customised to suit particular items to be packaged or they can be bought as more generic boards which can then be easily cut down. There is little thermal conductivity in these products making them all the more effective as they are durable in high and low temperatures, meaning whatever they are packaging stays safe.

This kind of polystyrene does not have to be used in large boards or blocks, and can often be seen in the form of “peanuts” which are smaller pieces of packing material that cushion fragile items. These polystyrene products are relatively inexpensive to purchase in large quantities and can be reused thanks to the fact that they are so durable and do not break down.
